global search field gets bigger
The global site search field on some sites expand on entry. This keeps the search field small until needed, and visually unobtrusive, and makes it more welcoming for typing search criteria when needed.
See

hierarchy navigation
Perhaps based on the original Windows 3.1 file manager, or more recently on many of Apple's products, a hierarchy of folders (or other containers) at the left, and clickable nodes display the content at the right. See iTunes as the most ubiquitous example, but it is used for countless desktop software applications or web sites that have a user-editable hierarchy, including drag & drop for moving either nodes or containers, rename (in place) of nodes or containers, and reflection of the node title in the title of the content at right.

User Card pops out when hovering over someones profile picture or display name. It is a small panel presenting a larger version of the user's display image, the user's full display name, and other relevant information about the target. User Cards can be used to provide a way for users to get more information about other community members without interrupting their current task. It is also helpful way to prevent identity-related clutter on the screen.
Extra benefit of using User Cards is that by providing an easy way to get more info about other community members, they make it easier…
